Originally ShareCropper’s Park, Veteran’s garden was established in 2016 and is run by Rev. Melton Harvey, a Navy Veteran, in a partnership with Veteran’s Affairs of Saginaw, Aleda Lutz Hospitial, The VA Administration, VA, Vessel of God Ministries
The garden was originally planted with community member volunteers, veterans and “church folks”. The garden is run by 6 veterans and 10 youth volunteers. The hoophouse was added in 2016 to extend the growing season in the garden. The garden grows collards, salad greens, tomatoes, spinach, cabbage, broccoli and melons. The garden uses organic practices and 100% of the food is donated to the community, veterans and neighbors who are free to pick from the garden. In addition to produce, the garden features flowers, art pieces and sculptures to add to the beauty of the garden.
Future plans for the garden include practicing season extension and maintain the garden as a place for the community to access fresh healthy produce.
