The Unicorn Community Garden is a product of community activism. Prior to the garden, the space was used as a dumping ground. The space was cleared out over the course of a few years, and the surrounding residents started private gardens, then created community gardens in the space. There are 6 gardens on-site; 3 private and 3 for community use. The garden consists of tomatoes, lettuces, corn, peas, turnips, mustard greens, apples, grapes, pears, mulberries, yellow squash, peppers, plums, onions, cucumbers, eggplants, string beans, bush greens, watermelons, herbs, spinach, flowers, cabbage, and collards. Each year gardeners like to try something new in the space. The space is now used for beautification, food access, and an entertainment area for barbecues. The techniques used in the space include fences, composting, and plenty of weeding. Ruth Mott horticulturists have provided educational services for the gardeners, and funding for the garden is solely from the private citizens.
This year the Unicorn Community Garden suffered the loss of an important member of their gardening team, Brian. They loss was sudden and has affected all members of the gardening team. They are more determined that ever to keep growing and heap other gardeners that want to grow.
