The Food Garden Tour is an annual event where residents from the Flint area are able to gain a stronger sense of pride for their city. For most of the gardeners on the tour, this is the only time during the year for them to showcase their space to so many people. The gardeners have a chance to teach others about what they are passionate about, and what they are doing to help improve, and bring together the communities they live in. As one of the missions of edible flint, the Food Garden Tour aids in reconnecting the Flint area residents with the land and with each other. |
Sometimes it can be easy to see the disappointment and neglect in the city of Flint, but for some, many who do not live within the city, it could be harder to see all there is to take pride in throughout the city. From what once was an abandon home or lot, to what may now be a beautiful urban garden space that a family, or neighborhood can enjoy. edible flint's Food Garden Tour encourages anyone and everyone to join, including those who do not live in Flint. This event truly showcases the beauty of the city, and the work that is currently being done to help beautify and build a stronger sense of community within Flint. |
Along with the pride and strength the Food Garden Tour aims to build, it also showcases the number of urban gardens throughout Flint and surrounding areas. Right now Flint residents have a slim selection of stores nearby where they can buy fresh produce. By growing their own food, these gardeners are able to increase food access within the city, which also builds stronger, healthier communities. In fact, most of the gardeners on the tour mentioned how they give away most of their food to either family, friends, or anyone passing by. Whether it is giving away fresh produce, teaching others valuable gardening skills, or creating a safe place where neighbors and children can gather, the gardeners themselves are improving their communities in many positive ways. |
