Through Genesee County Parks, The Ruth Mott Foundation, and the City of Flint, Max Brandon Park has been able to build this community garden. Established in 2014 with 6 raised garden beds an additional 6 raised garden beds were added to meet the demand of the neighbors. The community garden is used as a teaching space for children enrolled in the summer parks program who spend 1.5 hours in the garden each week throughout the summer. The garden grows squash, tomatoes, greens, cucumbers and lettuce. All of the produce grown in the garden is harvested by the children in the summer program and used by the community surrounding Max Brandon Park. The garden space would not be possible without the help of the outreach coordinators, the Ruth Mott Foundation for providing funding to help develop educational outreach and the City of Flint for allowing Genesee County Parks to adopt Max Brandon Park.
Future plans are to expand food gardens in parks to so residents with limited gardening space have a place to grow.
