Born and raised in Burton, MI, Theresa is no stranger to growing and planting due to her family of gardeners. Joining the Children’s Museum five years ago, Theresa tends to the gardens on the premises as a part-time staff member, the sole gardener and caretaker of the garden. The Museum garden is growing carrots, tomatoes, morning glory, watermelon, mustard greens, lettuce, romaine, carrots, chard, beets, collards, parsley, chives, bell peppers, okra, corn, broccoli, potatoes, kale, spinach, squash, cucumber, string beans, radishes, sunflower, and strawberries. The space is used for educational purposes for community members and school groups who come through. The space includes vegetables and fruits as well as a sensory garden. The seeds used this year were provided by Theresa as well as edible flint. Ruth Mott Foundation has played a major role in funding the garden and the land is leased from Kettering.
In the future the Children’s Museum anticipates starting a summer camp in which they would continue to utilize the educational gardens.
