Originally established by the local Neighborhood Association, the Brownell-Holmes garden is now run by Food Corps. Member LaBria Lane, a Flint native and Food Corps. Member since 2015. The focus of the garden is to engage the children and staff at Brownell-Holmes and the Neighborhood Association, be a source of healthy food for the neighborhood and a classroom space for students and staff. The garden also provides students and staff a space that can be used for de-escalation and engaging with nature, eventually LaBria would like it to see the garden become a classroom space. The garden grows asparagus, watermelon, tomatoes, potatoes, squash, peppers, corn, greens, and broccoli. There is a hoophouse, raised garden beds, and a traditional in ground garden space. This year a pollinator garden was space was added to teach the kids the importance of pollinators to food.
Future plans for the garden include compost bins, a reading circle and a learning courtyard with greenhouse.
