Register now for the 8th edible flint Annual Food Garden Tour
July 6, 2016, Flint, MI – edible flint is hosting their 8th Annual Food Garden Tour, Wednesday, July 27. The Tour offers a close-up look at innovative and inspiring food gardens in the Flint area.
The movement to utilize urban properties to produce food is growing nationally, and Genesee County is right in step. With more than 12,000 vacant residential lots in Flint alone, residents now have more opportunities than ever to turn available properties into productive spaces. Residents are improving their health, reducing their weekly grocery bills and transforming their neighborhoods by creating urban gardens in both their own yards and on neighboring vacant lots.
This year, The Tour will showcase 15 food gardens in the Flint area. Tour participants will meet local food producers, including some who are growing food year round and raising bees and chickens. They will also see, firsthand, how local residents of all ages are transforming community concerns, such as vacant land, into valuable neighborhood assets. Participants will be transported to the garden sites by bus or bicycle each route visiting 5 gardens.
Last year’s garden tour attracted more than 250 participants. Check in begins at 4:30pm at the Flint Farmers’ Market 300 E. First Street, Flint, MI 48502. Buses and bicycles will depart at 5:00pm. Immediately following the tour, participants are invited to join edible flint for music and a light meal prepared by local vendors. As they eat, participants are also able to enjoy edible flint’s 4th annual Partners in Healthy Living Fair with local groups promoting health and community being featured.
This year edible Flint will be requiring a $5 donation from each participant, which will be used to support future Food Garden Tours. Participants must register in advance. Registration opens July 1st. To register for the bus or bike tour, please visit edibleflint.org or fill out a paper registration form and send to 605 N. Saginaw St. Suite 1A. Registered seating is confirmed with receipt of payment. Registration will close as soon as all spots are filled, additional registrants will be placed on a waiting list and notified of any cancellations.

Purpose & Goals
Purpose: To celebrate innovative and inspiring food gardens in the Flint area.
The Food Garden Tour work group was an off shoot of Growing the Network and its scope quickly grew into a full fledged work group. We meet throughout the year in collaboration with other groups to bring a unified approach to the Food Garden Tour by collaborating with other workgroups and involving all edible flint participants. The first edible flint garden tour event took place in 2009, increasing in scale and scope in 2010. In 2011 sponsorships were an added element, as the event continued to grow and increase edible flint’s recognition in our community.
The Annual Food Garden Tour is planned by the Food Garden Tour work group. The tour occurs each year and highlights Flint’s food gardens.
Meetings are the 1st and 3rd Thursdays 2:00pm- 4:00pm at The Neighborhood Engagement Hub 3216 M.L. King Ave
Weekly meetings occur in the month or so prior to the tour, and can take place several times in the week leading up to the tour.
