Purpose
To celebrate innovative and inspiring food gardens in the Flint area.
Goals
The Food Garden Tour work group’s goals are to:
Showcase a diversity of gardens that are transforming neighborhoods, increasing
property values, employing youth, removing blight, increasing food access, improving
diets & decreasing grocery bills.
Build civic pride and community goodwill.
History
The Food Garden Tour work group was an off shoot of Growing the Network and its scope quickly grew into a full fledged work group. We meet throughout the year in collaboration with other groups to bring a unified approach to the Food Garden Tour by collaborating with other workgroups and involving all edible flint participants. The first edible flint garden tour event took place in 2009, increasing in scale and scope in 2010. In 2011 sponsorships were an added element, as the event continued to grow and increase edible flint’s recognition in our community.
Food Garden Tour meetings are TBD in 2012 – work group typically meets monthly in the winter months, and more frequently as the event draws near. Weekly meetings occur in the month or so prior to the tour, and can take place several times in the week leading up to the tour .
