Purpose

To improve community health by increasing the information about and consumption
of healthy food.

Goals

The goals of Access & Education are to:
Increase understanding about how food choices impact health.
Increase the availability of healthy food.
Advocate for policy changes within institutions and decision-making bodies related to
healthier and more local food purchasing.

History
The
Access & Education work group began during one of edible flint’s early strategic planning processes. In addition to the goals listed, the group has a priority of working with young people and engaging them in the processes of making changes in the way we eat. Learning how and where people access food has been a priority of the group and members feel that knowing what kinds of option people have to eat is a critical first step in the process of making healthy food available. Since conducting a small scale assessment in the 48504 and 48505 zip codes, Access & Education is working toward building a coalition that may potentially expand this assessment.
